About South Texas Health System McAllen

South Texas Health System first opened its doors in 1919 to provide care to the people of the Rio Grande Valley. STHS McAllen's full-service acute care facility opened in December 1985 after spending more than 50 years in downtown McAllen as McAllen Municipal Hospital, McAllen General Hospital and McAllen Methodist Hospital. STHS McAllen was the first in McAllen and neighboring cities to offer services such as open-heart surgery, one-day cardiac catheterization and magnetic resonance imaging. Today, it’s become a large tertiary hospital for specialized treatment with a Level I Trauma Center – making STHS McAllen an invaluable healthcare asset in South Texas. We are also a Comprehensive Stroke Center.

We recently welcomed our baby at McAllen Medical Center, and we cannot say enough wonderful things about the care we received. From the moment we arrived, the entire team made us feel comfortable, supported, and genuinely cared for. The pre-op and post-op staff were outstanding. They were attentive, compassionate, professional, and always made sure we understood what was happening and had everything we needed. We especially want to recognize our amazing Labor & Delivery nurses Agnes, Monette, and Julie. Your kindness, patience, attentiveness, and reassurance made our experience so much more comfortable and memorable. We also want to give a special thank you to the nursery nurses, Kendra, Rosa and Letty. Knowing our baby was being cared for by such kind, attentive, and compassionate nurses gave us tremendous peace of mind. Having a baby is an experience we will remember for the rest of our lives, and we are incredibly grateful that the staff at McAllen Medical Center helped make it such a positive one. Your hard work and compassion truly made a difference.

Friendly and knowledgeable. The technician knew the latest updates on the equipment being used and about the procedure. She played calming music and had dim lighting which created such a peaceful environment and made me feel relaxed throughout the procedure. No good word on the receptionist in the main lobby

Every one from the nursing staff to the cafeteria workers were friendly and accommodating. I felt secure and cared for during my entire time at this hospital. The staff couldn’t have been kinder or more attentive. Thank you for a most comfortable stay.

From the moment my daughter was admitted to Labor & Delivery until my grandson was finally discharged from the NICU, we received exceptional care. Every nurse, doctor, and staff member treated our family with kindness, compassion, and professionalism during one of the most emotional times of our lives. Our grandson was born prematurely and spent weeks in the NICU. The doctors and nurses were incredibleβ€”they kept us informed every step of the way, answered all of our questions, and cared for him as if he were their own. Their dedication, patience, and expertise gave us hope and strength each day. Today, our grandson is finally home, and we are filled with gratitude. Thank you to everyone in Labor & Delivery, the NICU team, and all the doctors who played a part in his care. We will never forget the love, support, and outstanding medical care you gave our daughter and grandson. You truly made a difference in our lives, and we are forever thankful. God bless each and every one of you.

My daughter delivered at this facility on February 25, 2026. She had a wonderful experience with the labor and delivery nursing staff. All her questions and concerns were always acknowledge and answered accordingly. My daughter bad experience was after she delivered. Being a new mom and a postpartum cesarean section; newborn nursery personnel were never available to helping her when she had questions regarding breastfeeding and extra supplies for baby. She was at the hospital for 36 hrs, and she was told they didn't have a lactation consultant whenever she asked for help. She delivered on a Wednesday afternoon. She wasn't offered a breastfeeding pump to help her with intake. She had a good production but needed help to latch her baby. Upon dismissal it took almost 12 hrs for the newborn nursery staff to get her paperwork ready. Her experience would of been fabulous if it wasn't for Newborn Nursery Staff being so inattentive, unwilling to help, and lack of professionalism whenever questions were asked. I would not recommend this hospital for newborn moms, for they will not get any help with their newborn baby.
